At Black Joy Creations our mission is to connect you to the natural beauty of life, humanity, and community. We believe in life’s process and the beauty of transformation. That is why we proudly chose to handcraft items and fumble along the creation journey. The process can be painstaking yet joyful. And the end can be bittersweet, yet liberating.
Our logo is the Ananse Ntontan, a West-African symbol. The image represents a spider web that symbolizes wisdom, creativity, and the complexities of life. Ananse is an African folklore character who is a bit of trickster. He utilizes his resources, like his trickery, to survive. During slavery, the Ananse stories made their way to the Caribbean and the United States with the enslaved. The stories of Ananse began to represent resistance and survival as the enslaved learned the power of their wisdom and creativity to survive brutality.
For everyone, life is a ball of joys and challenges. But for Black people, joy is especially necessary. As Black folx navigate a world that devalues and dismisses them, joy is an act of intention and resistance against racism and oppression. Black joy reclaims stories and humanity. Black joy is art, music, inventions, food, play, movement, love, and so much more. At our company, Akeera utilizes her Black joy to handcraft a piece that ultimately brings joy to you.
When you know who made your item, how it was made, and what it meant for the maker, the item is no longer just an object–it is a human connection. With our partnership with One Tree Planted, this connection continues to blossom for generations to come. Through our shared exchange and investment in each other, may we experience pure joy and a moment of liberation.
